charlie7, thanks, have done some of this before, but somehow, I am not getting the same results as I did before, and not sure why (wish I had saved them...) At some point, I saw the census records, and a date for possible naturalization (also Ellis Island census?). I cannot now obtain these in searc...

Keep in mind, I have little info. I am not even 100% sure what state in which my great grandfather died (or naturalized or the dates). Any suggestions?

Part of the problem, is that there is some discrepancy about what name he went by.

Thanks!
Patricia

nevermind, thanks. I now see it stands for National Archives and Records administration. I am feeling very confused, though. I don't understand if I should request my great grandfather's death certification from NARA? And then turn around and submit that to uscis. I still don't understand whether *n...

Peggy, I'm not sure what Nara stands for? Is that the National ARchives? And are they located where Uscis and freedom of info act/paperwork goes?

CJC- I agree that I need to go ahead and send in my request to the uscis. The problem is I don't have the death certificate and am not sure how to obtain, and it sounds like I need it to send with the uscis request (foia). Am I wrong? Peggy- Is the online service any quicker? Must one still have the...

Thanks! I see your point of view and as long as there are other options, I will try those first ,and of course, if no progress, shortly thereafter try contacting the uscis. A few weeks more, is so little compared to the time I'll spend or have to wait (w/o taking any action to obtain the info) :shoc...

I just saw the thread below mine which basically turns out to be the same question as mine. This is very disconcerting to hear that it could take years to get naturalization papers from the uscis! Ughhhh! ANyway, any advice would be cool. I'm trying to thoroughly read the other thread too. thanks! :...

Privacy Act or Freedom of Info (which is correct) ????

Sorry I know this is dumb, but to request the naturalization papers I need (including cert #, and permanent resident card #) do I need the Privacy Act forms, or the Freedom of Information act forms? Also, I am filling out the G-639, which I thought was the appropriate form. It is asking me for natur...

Thanks for responding! I love how you worded that "polite, negotiation/psychic divination of your particular consular officers communication style/intentions will lead you to the answers". I guess I am lacking in the mind reading of said species. ;) That was 2 funny! Thanks, I needed that....

What does it mean when...

Hey all! I have 2 questions. Firstly, I talked with a consular agent for my area of residence and she couldn't have been more confusing. I asked her whether (if applying through paternal great grandfather, grandfather, and father's line) it was necessary for me to have either 1)long hand version of ...

Btw- thanks mmaughan271, for listing the consular agent's name. This gives me a nice lead with which I can find out a more personal e-mail for Ms Cecchi or try letter writing, phoning or.... plan #B -- (in honor of capitul)--
fax harassment. (kidding). 8) :D

Thanks capitul and mmaughan271! I haven't tried regular mail. The assumption being that if they didn't want and/or have the capabilities for e-mail, they wouldn't post an e-mail address. Also, I would think it would be easier for the consulate to reply via e-mail than to reply to a letter but then a...

Well my first e-mail was not responded to. I have heard that the Italians do not respond well to e-mail for whatever reason (maybe it's not formal enough)...but this is getting to be discourteous, imo. I have sent a second e-mail to the one you requested. Hopefully I will hear back something shortly...
