Em: I am glad that there is no fee to file the application but may be they should collect fees to make the process faster. I will file an application for italian citizenship once my wife's is granted and we are married for 3 years. I kept trying the phone # of the NYC consulate all afternoon but no ...

Tiffany, Thanks for the support! I spoke with someone from the NYC consulate and I was given a number to call this afternoon from the citizenship division. Hopefully, they will accept the Brazilian documents and if not I will ship them to Brazil this week to have them legalized by the Italian consul...

cybertao: I know you are just trying to help...but your previous post were tremendously negative and did not provide any helpful advice. I now appreciate you sharing a little bit of your experience with the Brazilian documents to better understand your input. To certify the brazilian documents is no...

cybertao: My wife has a green card and the NYC consulate will process her documentation as if she was a USC...the NYC consulate does not have to deal with Brazil at all for the purposes of processing her application. The Italian NYC consulate will legalize the documents, and I made sure this was the...

Em: Tricking the NYC Consulate seems a hard thing to do. I e-mail the official Italian translator who translated all of our Brazilian documents and she will get me back with an answer as to how long will it take for the Italian consulate down in Brazil to process my in-laws applications once my wife...

Em: Thank you again for replying to one of my inquiries. A lease agreement is something we could easily arrange. The fact that they are Brazilians is an issue, but the consulate has technically jurisdiction over the persons within the territory of jurisdicion irrespective of their national status, b...

NYC Consulate --Documentation required to prove NY residence

My Brazilian wife is applying for Italian citizenship through her great great grandfather. One of our main motivations for obtaining Italian citizenship is for her mom and sister to obtain it (faster than they would in Brazil) as well so they can come visit us in the US without the need of obtaining...

I just came across a statement in the FAQ of this site, that my wife who is Brazilian and has a green card would not be permitted to apply in the Italian consulate here in New York because she is not a USC... anybody know if this is strictly enforced in NY?

Tiffany: How can my mother-in-law obtain the PdiS in attesa di cittadinanza after my wife's application is approved? The US Consulate in Sao Paulo was very unhelpful regarding my mother-in-law's visa application... They completely ignored the fact that her daughter is legal resident of this country ...

The Italian Consulate that has jurisdiction over my mother-in-law is in Curitiba, PA, Brazil and it takes between 8-10 years to do this process there. The consulate in my opinion does this purposely to discourage people from applying because they must be afraid they will end up with half Brazil in I...

Em: Your post was not that encouraging, I thought we would be able to finish with the process this year...because our main motivation to get the process done quickly is for my mother-in-law so she can visit us in the US with the Italian passport without the need of reapplying for a visa for which sh...

Em: Thanks for your reply. My wife has not become a naturalized USC yet, she only has a green card for now. Did they tell you in the NY Consulate how long will it take to process the application? Did they require proof that the Italian ancestor never naturalize? Why did it take 4 months to schedule ...

Tiffany: Io capisco l' Italiano ma non parlo molto. If I study 6 months intensively I will be speaking perfect Italian because I have studied in the past but never practice and it is very similar to Portuguese and Spanish. I understand 75% of everything I read. Anyway, today my wife spoke to her gra...

We also plan to live abroad in the future (15-25 years from now) we would like to have to opoprtunity to alternate addresses between the US, Brazil (I plan to get that Brazilian citizenship too, but I have to live In Brazil for a year to be eligible for it), Europe and my native Uruguay. Are you nat...

Your Italian seems to be great, did you take classes or did you learn with your husband? I also want my children (whenever I'll have them) to acquire Italian citizenship and that is also one of the main motivations. My wife and I reside in New York State (Westchester County) so it will be great that...
