Hi, My great great grandfather immigrated to Brazil from Italy on 1888, he've never being naturalized brazilian. Then my great grandfather was born and he had my grandmother. My father, her son, was born in 1944, they are all death. Do I have a chance to qualify and get an Italian citzenship? Thank you. Marcia.

Você não pode beneficiar através da sua avó paterna, uma vez que você pai nasceu antes de 1948. Era seu avô paterno italiano?

PS: You do not qualify via your father's mother, since your father was born prior to 1948. Was your father's father italian?

My paternal great grandfather was born in Italy 1882, great grandmother 1884 and paternal grandmother 1906. They immigrated to the USA approximately around 1911. Do I qualify? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Did your paternal grandmother ever naturalize, if so, when? When was your father born?

If your father was born before 1/1/48, your grandmother could not have passed citizenship to him, and you would therefore not qualify jus through your paternal grandmother.

If your grandmother naturalized before your father's birth, she would not have been an Italian citizen at the time of your father's birth and could not have passed citizenship to him.

If your father was born after 1948 and your grandmother had not naturalized by that time. (Oops, posted at the same time--but we're both right. :D )

Thank you both for your reply, I appreciate it very much. My father was born in the U.S. in 1927 and I am not sure if my grandmother had naturalized at the time or not. Regardless, it sounds like I do not qualify. I will look into another route. Many thanks again!

one more question about qualifying

Postby kvideagirl » Wed Jul 16, 2008 6:15 pm

Would it matter if I tried to qualify through my grandmother's brother, my uncle, who was born in italy in 1910 in italy and came to the US in 1911? Since he is a male, does this have any bearing at all? Again, thank you for your time, it is very much appreciated.

No, it has to be a direct line. Is there any way you could qualify through your paternal grandfather? That would work.

If none of this applies, you can obtain citizenship through residency (three years because of your Italian connection within the third degree). You would submit your application in Italy after the second year.

I realized after I sent this email that it must need to be a direct line in order to qualify. Unfortunately my paternal grandfather is not Italian, only my grandmother. Hopefully someday my family and I would have the opportunity to live in Italy for 3 years to qualify but today there are bills and a mortgage to pay! :-) Thanks again for your help.

This is really unfortunate. I am in a similar circumstance, but since my father was born in October of 1948 (after 1.1.48 ), I qualify. Good luck in the future!
