Qualify through Mother's family

Postby bbrockway » Wed Jan 19, 2011 7:20 pm

I'm confused - everything I've read indicates you have to get citizenship through your father's family, but these posts indicate can also do through mother's family??

My situation is:

I was born in US in 1963
my MOTHER was born in US in 1932
my grandMOTHER was born in US in 1910
my great grandfather was born in Italy in 1889, immigrated here and never naturalized

Any hope?

You can qualify through your mother's family BUT the female line is limited by the law that does not permit a woman to pass citizenship before 1948. In your case, it does not work because your mother was born in 1932. Thus, she would have been able to obtain Italian citizenship from her father but not through her mother. Unless your grandfather was also Italian, you cannot qualify through this line.
