Grandfather not naturalized

Postby kama1950 » Fri Jan 27, 2012 3:53 pm

Sirs: My grandfather was born in Italy in 1880. He immigrated in to USA 1896. My father was born in NYC in 1912. Search as I may, I cannot find any records that he was naturalized, and I believe that he may have just stayed here. I have census information in both 1910 and 1930, and a WWI and WWII draft registration, but no social security or any proof of naturalization. How should I proceed? Thanks

Use the USCIS Genealogy program to obtain a certificate of nonexistence of a citizenship record and provide the additional proofs the local consulate requires. Since your grandfather arrived in 1896 it is possible that he naturalized prior to 1906. The USCIS genealogy program only handles naturalizations between 1906 and 1956.

Prior to 1906 naturalization rules were not always uniform. Most naturalizations went through the local courts. Some went through the Federal courts. Where did your grandfather live in the US? If he lived in the New York area there are many online resources you can use to get a start on the process.
