Grandfather Born in France To an Italian

Hi,
I am strugglling on what I need to prove that I qualify. My maternal grandfather was born in France to an Italian. He never lived there. His birth certificate says that his father was "born in Italy". As a baby he moved back to Italy. He emigrated to the US. My mother was born in the US 12 years before my grandfather applied for citizenship. I was born after 1948. Will my grandfather's French birth certificate be accepted? If not documents what will I need?

It appears that his application for US citizen recognizes that he had dual French and Italian citizenship. The document mentions that he will no longer have allegiance to the Republic of France and to Vittorio Emmanuele III, king of Italy.
