Determine if an ancestor was ever naturalized and, if so, discuss your consulate's requirements for proving this.

husband and wife citizenship

Both of my grandparents were Italian citizens when they married in 1919. When my Grandfather became a naturalized US citizen in 1927 and my grandmother was still living in Italy, what was her citizenship status? At least how did the Italian government look at her status? She became a naturalized US citizen in the 1940's.

The U.S. did not grant automatic citizenship to spouses in 1927. Since she was not, then, a U.S. citizen by virtue of her husband's naturalization, she was still an Italian citizen. Her naturalization in the 1940s confirms this.
