Yes, you need to go separately, unless you lie. However, I do not recommend the latter because believe it would compromise your citizenship and may cause it to be revoked. In any case, the consulate would know something was up if you presented a US passport and your family all had Canadian ones as the application.

Hmmm... I'm not sure then.

I didn't go through a Canadian Consulate, but the one in Miami wanted my US Passport and my driver's license.
