Ripaleaten, Italy

Postby flproject13 » Tue Jul 03, 2007 12:09 pm

I'm doing some genealogical research (not for citizenship purposes) and according to Ancestry.com my great great grandfather came to America on the Ancora and was born in a town called Ripaleaten. However, I can't find that town on any map, so I think it is spelled wrong or maybe the town doesn't exist. He was born in 1882. Anybody have an ideas?

Sound it Out

Postby toddwisn » Fri Oct 12, 2007 7:19 pm

The best advice I can give is what worked for me: sound it out phonetically the way an Italian would be saying it to a (most likely) culturally-challenged American who would be writing it down. That's how I was able to get "Chiaromonte" from "Keromunde" listed on my great grandfather's WWI Draft Registration Card. It worked because I was then able to get his birth certificate through ICGS.
Ripaleatan sounds to me like maybe "Napolitan" or something similar. Also look closely at the ship record..look for other people who have a similar entry as their city or for other penmanship clues. On my great grandfather's ship record, his city was incorrectly transcribed as Ofiaramonte because the C looked like an O and the h dipped a little.
Hope that helps a bit! Good luck!

If you don't get an answer here, try posting the same question on this site: http://italiangenealogy.tardio.com/Forums.html. The genealogy section gets the most hits, so I'd post it there.

Good luck, Peggy M

Could the town be RIPALDINA?
Other possibilities RIVOLTANO or "RIPALVELLA" or RIPALDA

I used this database (and the "sounds like" option):

Probably the city is Ripaldina (a portion of comune of Arena Po ) - province: Pavia - region: Lombardia

Ripateatina--it's in the region of Abruzzo, provincia Chieti

I'd try that
