Dear Sidney:

Glad I could be of help.

The post by Nicola notes some of the ways in which US taxes are not quite so marvelously low as we are repeatedly told. And there are other costs of our mania for apparently low taxes that are visible in most places throughout the country: crumbling infrastructure, schools, etc....

But hey, Sidney, if you've got everything set up nicely--job, insurance, home surveillance cameras in your gated community etc--why should you care, right? That's what I was taught by my conservative family, but I've just kept noticing that some pretty ugly bills just keep coming due for our country in one way or another.

Of course, it's not the wealthiest Americans who have to pay those, is it?

Ever since Reagan this country's motto has been "High Risk, High Reward." But that's a totally bogus motto as recent economic events have clearly demonstrated.

The true motto is "All Profit is Private, All Risk and Debt is Public."

How very admirable.
