Father's Surname // Italian Name Change

Postby ivaniannoli » Tue Mar 16, 2010 1:57 pm

I've heard that Italy requires people to use their Father's last name, regardless of whether that's the name they've used elsewhere (i.e. in the States).

I've also heard that changing a surname in Italy is very difficult and requires extremely compelling reasons.

BUT, I've also heard that those rules may be loosening. (My cousin sent me a link from an Italian newspaper about a year ago that said the Italian govt. was considering changing that rule, or at least easing the restrictions).

I have never used my Father's last name, but it looks like I'll have to once I get my passport. This will pose a problem, as my US documents will differ from my Italian documents.

Does anybody have any up-to-date info on this?

Many thanks!

Here's something I dug up during a little Google session on the subject.

They may have recently revised the rule about name changes and name uses for dual citizens.

Translated link (by Google):

///[YOU MAY HAVE TO COPY & PASTE THIS ADDRESS INTO YOUR URL BAR]///

And here's the original in Italian: http://nuke.cognomematerno.it/

Look on the right column, under where it says "News."

Anybody have anything further on this? If so, please share.

Thanks!
